RED ACTIVA – SUSTRAN LAC
Network of Sustainable Transportation in Latin America and the Carribean

During the international conferences that were held in Quito, Ecuador, September 2-15, 2008 regarding sustainable mobility, the undersigned organizations founded the Red Activa- Sustran LAC, an initiative that seeks to bring together the different civil society organizations interested in the promotion and development of sustainable transportation in Latin America and the Caribbean, especially active or non-motorized transportation:

Mission Statement

1.    We are a non-profit network that unites organizations, civil society groups and associations, that collaborate, share information, coordinate, and mutually support each other in order to work united in promoting sustainable mobility in Latin America and the Caribbean, especially in its active mode (walking, cycling, users of public transportation, persons with limited mobility, and others.)
2.    We consider active transport to be the ideal means of mobility, for its health benefits and contributions to a sustainable environment, alternative energy, social equality, sovereignty, civic education, the recovery of public spaces, gender and intergenerational equality, recreation and sports.
3.    We believe it is indispensable to move towards public policies that promote the use of public transportation as well as active transportation (non-motorized) in an integrated way and, in contrast, discourage the indiscriminated use of individual motorized vehicles.
4.    The participating groups and associations in the network have full autonomy and can decide the orientation of their actions on the public and/or private sphere, conforming to their own visions and objectives.

5.    Membership to the network is strictly voluntary and is not restricted by ideological, political or religious motives, nor by socioeconomic level, age, gender or sexual preferences, within an environment of friendship, mutual respect, and cooperation.

6.    As a network with origins in communities, we support the empowerment of civil society groups and associations and any other iniciatives that seek to work in favor of these principles.

7.    We work together with authorities, employers, local and national government representatives, as well as with any other person or institution that is ready to provide facilities and promote use of active transport.
